Since the establishment of INTRAVAL, the bureau has often been asked to carry out research on the policy theme 'youths'. To formulate good youth policy and youth care facilities, information is required on, for example, the living conditions of children and youths, the available care facilities, the characteristics of groups of youths with problems, and the background of the dangerous or criminal behavior they may exhibit.

The research themes are, among others, the following:

INTRAVAL can also be involved in the development of projects. INTRAVAL formulates project proposals for, among others, youth participation and youth monitors, sets up these projects and is also able to implement them.

Youth participation is an important theme within project development. This involves providing youths with a say in the formulation of policies, services and activities in their direct surroundings. INTRAVAL is also involved in increasing the participation of all groups of youths: highly educated or not, ethnic minorities or caucasian, children or adolescents. This demands the use of new and unorthodox forms or communication, and a real willingness on the part of those involved to adapt their styles of decision making and management. INTRAVAL stimulates youth participation by involving youths in the implementation of research and projects.
